Stereotyping States: Louisiana

22 Jun

I want to stereotype the states.  All of them.  Today, I’m starting with Louisiana based on a suggestion.  DO NOT GET OFFENDED.  I’M JUST SPOUTING CRAP.

The way this will work is that I will state the things that the state makes me think of off the top of my head without any research.  And then maybe I’ll do a little research and see what I’m missing.

Off the Top of My Head

  • New Orleans/Mardi Gras – Uh duh.
  • Swamp People The enthralling show on the History Channel on which people go out onto the swamp to catch gators.  I love how they talk, I love how important it all is to them, and how entertaining it is.
  • Garth Brooks singing “Callin’ Baton Rouge” because that’s just a damn good song.
  • A boot.  What?  It’s shaped like one.

With a Little Research

  • Louisiana is the only state in the union that does not have counties. Its political subdivisions are called parishes.
  • Cajuns are descendants of the Acadians who were driven out of Canada in the 1700s because they wouldn’t pledge allegiance to the King of England.
  • One of their laws?  It is illegal to gargle in public places.
  • Another one?  One could land in jail for up to a year for making a false promise.

Erica’s Stereotypes

Now, I do not know anyone from Louisiana that I know of.  If I do, I’m sorry.  Or if you’re from Louisiana, I’m sorry.  But I’m just trying to come up with some sort of conclusion about the typical Louisianian.  I believe the typical Louisianian is:

  • honest (see final point under research)
  • enjoys crawfish and catching gators
  • likes spicy food
  • has at least one room in their house that is gold, purple and green
  • enjoys baking babies into cakes
  • has flashed at least 10 people in their lives
  • sings “Callin’ Baton Rouge” daily
  • is missing some teeth due to the law about gargling
  • gets really pissed off at The Waterboy
  • drinks tea and beer on the porch
  • and can catch a snake without flinching

Again, I’m just talking shit.  I’ll do it to every state, including my own.  So just laugh about it and get over it.

Cheers!

I love New Orleans….we went down for the Buckeye’s Championship game….it was great! You can drink a beer anywhere (right up my ally)…even in the very grocery store you are purchasing the beer from (seen it with my own two eyes…we were in the store and a guy picked up a case of beer then opened one and continued to shop).

First of all, no one usually drinks tea in Louisiana. It’s coffee and beer.
Only crazy people go out and catch alligators unless they do it for a living. Not many people catch alligators for money. If they do, it’s usually as a side job.
Only crazy people catch snakes in other states. That’s not what we do. People in Texas and Arkansas do that. We just kill them for being pests.

Only stupid drunk people flash floats during Mardi Gras.
No one enforces the gargling law…and I haven’t seen anyone with missing teeth.
I hate the song “Callin’ Baton Rouge.” The only time I’ve heard of it is on tailgating days on LSU campus.

And we like Mardi Gras, but not enough to paint our rooms those colors. You’re more likely to see a black and gold room, a purple and gold room, or a white and red room for the Saints, LSU, and UL at Lafayette.

And these stereotypes are all for Southern Louisiana. Northern Louisiana is completely different.

As I said in the first paragraph, I was just spouting crap. 🙂

Plus, I’ve never been to LA. So feel free to spout crap about Ohio if you’d like.

      Cheers, Unie!

Louisiana: I live in North Louisiana. I have only been to actual Mardis Gras once. If I go south I go to the coast to fish at my family’s camp. There are almost more Cowboys fans where I live than Saints fans. I do not like LSU. My whole family, including myself, has attended Louisiana Tech. GO DAWGS!! And our homes sport red and blue. We do drink alot of sweet tea. We do love everything spicy! I can’t live without my Tabasco and Tony’s! I love seafood- especially crawfish. My neck of the woods is a strange mix of preppy, artsy, and country. I stay as far away from snakes and alligators as possible. North Louisiana doesnt have too many swamps, just forest. I find the waterboy hilarious- It stereotypes cajun country, not anywhere near where I live. (North and South LA could be to seperate states haha) As for “Calling Baton Rouge”, No one in my circle of family or friends really listens to country music. The small towns may have the drunkards and the cities may have the crazies who flash people. But for the most part, everyone is friendly, honest, and generally content. It is a very culturally diverse and unique place to live. I love my state! Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!

Ohio: I think maybe Glee is set there? Haha! I went to Cleveland. No humidity- I wore a jacket during summer! And my hair did exactly what I wanted it to for a change… No one talks to you… Or smiles at you… Or waves hi… No friendliness compared to where I live! I was offered fried chicken everywhere… Like it was the only food I ate. Weird names for things… (“pop” for cokes) Everyone was generally sort of grumpy :/ But I had a good trip! That’s all I got. Haha

Im from louisiana and that one about the gold, purple, or green rooms cracked me up. Because after thinking about it I realized I have all three colors in my house.
