Valentine’s Day Round-Up

Okay, so it turns out I didn’t take as many pictures as I thought I did over Valentine’s Day, but I did have great hair…

Valentine’s Day started amazingly (slight sarcasm).  On the Turnpike, my car began alerting me that there was not enough air in my tire.  Turns out it was the same one that kept losing air earlier in the winter.  A very slow leak.  I aired it up and then continued to Mike, who had tuna steaks, shrimp, veggies, and WINE waiting for me–all by candlelight!  Helluva guy, right?

We spent all night listening to music and talking to each other.  The next morning, we took my car to Sears so they could look at the tire.  They proceeded to tell me that there was a nail in it at an odd angle and that it couldn’t be plugged.  And because Delilah is an all-wheel-drive vehicle, I would have to buy four brand new tires…totally $817.00.  WHA?!

I called my daddy and whined and he told me to find a tire place that could do a vulcanized patch.  So being that we were in Franklin, PA on a weekend, there were hardly ANY tire places open.  But we found one!  They agreed to do it (although it might take a little while to squeeze me in).  I told the greasy guy behind the counter that he was my hero, and he laughed.

So Mike and I went to Franklin On Ice and saw all the ice sculptures.  Cute right?

Reminded me of Arctic Blast at Ashland University.

It was frigidly cold so we hurried back, and they called for me to come pick up my car.  Know how much they charged me?  $18.00.  AND THOSE DAMN PEOPLE AT SEARS WANTED ME TO PAY $817.00!!!!!!!

Such bull.

After that we went bowling:

I look angry and disheveled but it’s okay.

Then we got dinner at Foxtales and watched a movie.  It was such a good night.  🙂

So there you have it!  My Valentine’s Day weekend!

Punch Brothers – Finding My Love for Music Again

I know I told you that I would show you pictures of my Valentine’s Day today (HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY, by the way), but the truth is that I have been sick and sounding like a man, and last night, all I did was clear out my Hulu queue from the quiet solitude underneath my blankets.  Oh, and I ate four cups of green beans because hell, I couldn’t taste anything anyway (read: I LOVE GREEN BEANS).

Whoa.  Ramble.

That said.  I did not upload my pictures yet.  But you all responded awesomely to my post yesterday about Mike Blair and the Stonewalls, and I hope that some of you bought the album.  It’s so worth it.  And I’ll make Mike Blair handwrite you a thank you.  😉

Let me tell you a little about my Valentine’s Day weekend.  When I got to Mike’s on Friday, he had dinner ready and waiting…by candlelight.  🙂  What a man, right?  Tuna steaks, shrimp, and vegetables, I was in heaven.  So I drank wine and he drank some sort of man concoction.  After that, we were playing on his computer and talking about music.  After looking at some shows in Cleveland and showing each other what we had been listening to of late, we talked about “Melissa” by the Allman Brothers.

We love it LIVE.

When we were downtown in Wilmington back when we were dating, we stood outside of the Reel Cafe against the brick fence.  The canvas tent was covering the patio area and we were wrapped up in each other’s arms.  The band inside was playing “Melissa” and we were a hot mess.  Every time I hear Melissa, I think about how exciting it felt to feel his arm hair brushing up against mine for the first time and the way his red t-shirt looked in the yellow lights.  The humidity couldn’t even hang between us that night.

So on Friday when we started listening to that together, my whole music conundrum disappeared.  I felt music again.

Fast forward to today.  The new Punch Brothers was released today–Who’s Feeling Young Now–and my friend Tom who gave me the amazing vintage ad collection was kind enough to send it my way.

Ho. Lee. Seamonkeys!  It is INCREDIBLE!

I am so thankful that I have a boyfriend and friends who can cure music illness.  Please ya’ll, listen to the new Punch Brothers.  And then come to Appy Up with me in June to see them.  😉

What DOES a Man Want for Valentine’s Day?

UPDATE:  I forgot!  Mike also got me C. O. Bigelow menthol body lotion.  So I lied.  He definitely spent way more than $30.  Thanks, baby!

I’m avoiding the obvious answer, here.

First, I’d like to wish my Mike a Happy Valentine’s Day. He’s incredible–truly. I look forward to the day when we can be together and not have to travel to celebrate with one another.

But my friend and co-worker Chelsea asked me the other day, “What should we get men for Valentine’s Day?”  The truth is that women are easy to buy gifts for on mushy holidays.  Throw us some chocolate, get flowers delivered to us, write us a sweet card–we’re good to go.  I got a card, a bottle of wine, honey cinnamon almonds, and a third gift that will remain a secret.  Men, on the other hand, generally are harder to buy for.

I’m a firm believer that you should NEVER spend more than $50 on each other for Valentine’s Day.  And even that is way too much.  Mike and I went around $30 this year.

I bought him a subscription to Maxim and some socks.  🙂  (He wanted them and wouldn’t buy them for himself.)  He paid, and I picked up the tip at dinner (against Mike’s wishes) and bought provisions for the car ride the next day.  We try to keep it even.

But I think the following are good, not-outrageously priced gifts for men on Valentine’s Day:

1)  Magazine Subscriptions

2)  Video games (if priced right)

3)  FOOD.  Men love food.

4)  Car washing goodies (if they’re into it, obviously)

5)  Golf balls

6)  Simple clothing (no Affliction or any of that rhinestone jazz)

7)  Craft beer

8)  A bottle of liquor

Let’s face it.  It’s JUST Valentine’s Day.  Go out, enjoy each others’ company, and don’t get caught up in $$$.

That said, I would like to tell you about our Valentine’s Day weekend (in public/safe for work detail).

I got there Friday night, went out to dinner, got blitzed on a petit sirah and watched Zack Baggans from Ghost Adventurers try to seduce a ghost.

Saturday, we went to Mike’s hometown to see his family.  On the way, my 3-month old car’s windshield was cracked by a flying semi-rock.  Good thing I have full glass coverage!  Waiting to get it replaced as we speak.

Then we went to see Baby Brennan:

Needless to say, he made my ovaries glow.

And Sunday, while I took a nap, Mike went outside and scrubbed the inside of my car, Armor-alled EVERYTHING, conditioned my leather seats, sprayed off the outside, and filled it up with gas.  Then he came home and made me steak tacos.  See what a good man I have?
