Wilmington Vacay Recap (WITH PHOTOS!)

So I promised photos.  Surprisingly, I didn’t take that many.  And most of them are of Mike and I.  They are in the gallery below.

We got to Raleigh after a deafeningly quiet drive and slept on Hope’s couch for an hour.  It was so good to see her!  And then we drove the rest of the way to Wilmington, dropped off our things, and hit the beach.  It felt so good to be in the Carolina sun again.

That night, we ate Flaming Amy’s with Scott and Michelle, our wonderful, gracious hosts and incredible friends and then they took me to my first stand-up comedian at a club in Wilmington.  It was HILARIOUS.  🙂  After that, we went to the Black Sheep for an MFA party, and then home to sleep it all off.  And dang was I freakin’ tired.

Saturday, Mike, Michelle, and I went to the beach and got some more of that Carolina sun, and swam in the water.  It felt AMAZING.  We also watched a sailboat launch from the beach, which was pretty exciting if you ask me.  Saturday night, we watched the Trailer Park Boys and ate amazing chicken from Scotty’s grill.

Sunday, Scott and Mike went fishing and Michelle and I went and rounded up food for the 4th of July cookout our friends Brian and Chris were having.  We ate lunch at the Mellow Mushroom where I saw my friend and old student Erica D.  Then Mike and I buzzed around and went shopping where we both got some awesome deals at Belk (I miss that store) and Mike got new flip-flops which were sorely needed.  After that, we went to the cookout and then Mike and I sneaked away to Wrightsville Beach where we drank a bottle of white wine and watched at least 7 different sets of fireworks going off all around us.  It was really a nostalgic place for us to be at night, and it felt really good and new at the same time.

Monday was the actual 4th of July, and I woke up early and went fishing with Mike.  He looked so darn cute catching little spotty fish, and again, I got a little more sun.  Then we had lunch with my buddy Harden at Two Guys Grille and relaxed.  When we got home, we drank some beers before heading downtown to eat dinner at a German restaurant and then watch the Wilmington fireworks.  I got a little sketched out because there was no cell phone reception, so I didn’t get to see everyone that I tried to call, but it was okay.  The fireworks were awesome and there were tons of people down there.

Tuesday morning, we woke up and left the house by 6:30a.m. and took a leisurely ride home, where we stopped at the Tanger outlets, in Marietta, Ohio, and finally in New Philadelphia, Ohio to see my friend Shelley.  🙂

It was an awesome vacation.  Click the pics to make ’em bigger!

So we’re back from Wilmington.  🙂

I got to see a ton of people that I wanted to see, and unfortunately missed a few.  Lindsay, Carmen, Sarah, I really wish I could have seen you.  Our hours were full trying to fit three years of memories in only 4 short days, and downtown at the fireworks, I had no reception to be able to find some of you.

I am incredibly busy playing catch-up at work, but I will post pictures tomorrow.

4th of July Traditions

Sparklers.  Red White and Blue cookies.  Baseball.  Swimming.  Fireworks.

Lighting your cousin’s pine tree on fire with an intricate system of trash found around the yard and burning sparkler embers…

Whatever your tradition is, GO CELEBRATE!  July 4th is my favorite holiday.  You don’t have to get anyone a present.  You don’t have to stuff bread crumbs up a bird butt.  The food is good and simple, and smells like charcoal.  And you get to drink beer and play with fire.  What else could you want from a holiday?!

My family always got together on the 4th of July at Aunt Mary Lynn and Uncle Todd’s house.  Our parents drank and cooked.  And when it got dark, each father held a blowtorch to light our sparklers, and to set off bigger fireworks in the street.  And all the while, my cousins and I gathered shreds of paper from the yard, dry grass, and anything that looked like it might catch fire, and we built a pile under a tree and lit it on fire with our sparklers.  The tree caught fire.  It was saved.  🙂

I’ve spent 4th of July in a lot of different places.  Ex-boyfriends’ driveways, West Virginia to 4-wheel in the mountains, East Harbor with a friend from college, to Jimmy Bukket’s in Fremont.  But this year, Mike and I are going to spend the holiday weekend in Wilmington, where the fireworks go off over a river, and where our friends will get all liquored up with us, and where we can get all romantic and mushy about where we first met.  🙂

What are your 4th of July traditions?

Summer Feet

I am not so patiently awaiting my summer feet.  In the Winter, we all get soft, padding around in Mukkaluks, boots, those horrendous looking Ugg things that people wear (but I hear are quite warm).  We walk around our house in fluffy penguin socks and store away our flip-flops.  And then we slip on rain boots (well, those of us in Ohio anyway) for about 3 months before the summer because God forbid we have a dry day.

But not me.  Oh no.  I’m working on my summer feet.  I’m wearing those flip-flops already, sliding around in them until I twist my ankle.  And if it gets below 40 degrees, I’m wearing my Sperry’s, sans socks, because I’m ready for summer feet.

I used to be able to run across my grandparents’ gravel driveway barefoot and not think a thing of it.  I want that back.  I want those tough callused feet that could withstand anything.  And I want to not care if my feet are dirty.

Take Jenny for instance:

Jenny's Feet After a Weekend in DC and Cooperstown, NY

Oh we ran barefoot and in flip-flops through fields of goldenrod.  We climbed trees and felt the bark with our souls…and our soles.

Those were the days.  Let’s do that again, friends.  Say in Wilmington?  This July?  We can run barefoot like madmen and drink on docks?

Wait, I know why I don’t have my summer feet yet…I need to have someone to romp around with.  Okay friends–we now have a mission.

Happy Friday!

An Official Announcement: I Am Coming to Wilmington, NC

It’s official!  Officially I am going to  Wilmington!  I’ve had the travel bug for some time now, and I am still astounded to say that I miss Wilmington.

So when I get off of work on June 30, I am going to drive to Pennsylvania, pick up Mike, put him in the front seat of Delilah, throw his luggage in the back, and start off across Pennsylvania on our 12-hour drive to Wilmington!

And I’m not just excited about Wilmington.  I’m excited about a multitude of things:

Pilot Mountain

1)  The Drive.  I fell in love with the drive to Wilmington and certain parts of the way along with it.  I love the Sheetz in Breezewood, PA, and how all the gas stations sit in a tiny valley where huge roads intersect.  The cigarette tower in Richmond, VA, how dangerously close I come to Washington, DC and all its scary traffic.  I love Pilot Mountain in North Carolina, and the way I can convince myself that I already smell the ocean.   I love being in a car for 12 hours, drinking coffee and eating beef jerky, seeing the number of North Carolina license plates increase.  I love driving 75 mph and throwing my hand out the window to feel the wind rush through my fingers.

2)  Seeing friends.  Scott, Michelle, Harden, Jenny, Carmen, Erica, Amy, Loretta, Erin, Brent, the Stonewalls, Shane, Doug, Nick, St. John, and everyone else (If you want added in, let me know).

3)  FOOD. Flaming Amy’s, Mellow Mushroom, Indochine, gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

4)  Bars.  The Reel Cafe where I knew I loved Mike.  The Blue PostBarbary Coast, The Goat and Compass, Level 5, THE FAT PELICAN!

5)  Beaches.  Getting TAN!  And seeing the ocean.

6)  Driving around in the memories.  I’m so excited.

If you want to get together, please let me know!

Travel Bug (Watch Out Wilmy-ites!)

Maybe it’s the constant rain (and lack of thunder) here in North Central Ohio, or the fact that I haven’t left Ohio (other than to PA, of course) in just under a year, but by golly it’s time to get out of here for a little bit!  Don’t get me wrong!  I love Ohio, and I will probably always come back to it.  But this time last year, I was packing up and moving out of my home in North Carolina.  This year, I’m watching Roseanne, doing crunches and squats on my living room floor, having ridiculous dreams, and wishing someone was here to go for a night walk with me.

So where do I want to go?  Well, somewhere cheap of course!  I still have great friends in Wilmington who are willing to let Mike and I hunker down for a bit, so we planning a trip in June (BE READY).  I cannot wait to get back to Carolina Beach and Flaming Amy’s. And don’t tell anyone, but I’ve begun to miss it.  I miss the Fat Pelican and the Reel Cafe, the downtown smell and the night time beach walks.  I miss the moon on the ocean and the and at my feet.  BAH!  I swore I’d never miss that place…but I do.  And most of all, I miss the people.  I made great friends down there.  I think it’s safe to say that if Wilmington hadn’t been sooooo far away from my family, and my father hadn’t had a heart attack, and people hadn’t needed me, that I would have loved it.  It’s just SO hard when you can’t get to those you love.

And I do have a lot of good memories there.  Tons of them…  Many of them were with Mike, who I only got to spend two months in Wilmington with, and those were some of the best.

I miss the meteor shower on the beach, turning 24 in the ocean, drinking on the dock, staring at the ocean during a storm.

Mike also has an uncle out in Arizona, and we’re pretty sure that we’ll head that way (probably toward the fall) for a vacation.  I’ve never been west besides Las Vegas, and I’d KILL for a desert sunset.

I want so badly to go to Berkley Springs, West Virginia, where I’ve only ever driven through and stopped once at a Sheetz for a chicken caesar salad.  I felt as though I belonged there, with the quaint downtown, the yellow sunshine, and the sparkling roads.  But that’s a post for another time.

So as much as I might have said that I didn’t like living in North Carolina, I did.  Minus the humidity.  And as much as I might have said that I would never go back, I will.  I am sorry if I ever offended any of you by saying these things.  I miss you.
